“I always told the musicians in my band to play with what they know, and then to play above that. Because anything can happen, and that’s where great art and music happens.” -Miles Davis

“Some people have greatness thrust upon them. Very few have excellence thrust upon them. They achieve it. They don’t achieve it unwittingly, by doing what comes naturally, and they don’t stumble into it in the course of amusing themselves. All excellence involves discipline and tenacity of purpose.” -John Gardner

Advice From A Drummer

Sheila E Drumming“If you are really passionate about what you do and what you want, here’s my advice: Continue to work hard at it. Practice, practice, practice. Play and perform any chance you get, with any kind of musical genre you can. While I believe playing from your heart and soul is most important, learning to read music will also help. I recently visited a school’s music department and overheard the teacher telling his students, ‘Practice makes progress.’ I love this message. Becoming ‘perfect’ shouldn’t be the goal. Just keep trying to do your best. Growth, in and of itself, is the real goal.” -From, “The Beat Of My Own Drum” By: Sheila E

“It’s not enough to have a talent or a dream. That gives you a great start, but it’s working at it, perfecting it that makes you a success. The gift alone doesn’t get you there.” -Kevin Clash

“Our imaginations are so powerful, and can do so much good in our lives. However, there are times when our imaginations work overtime, and fear can be one of the unfortunate byproducts. Fear is the great stop sign that can halt change- or make it far more painful than it needs to be…Change so often takes courage, and fear so often provides the sticking point that overpowers courage. My belief is that we don’t have to give fear that much power. Fear can be just another trick of the mind…When fear is at its worst, it can truly numb and paralyze us.” -Jane Seymour
