It was cool to see a court reporter in this old school video from 1988.

This weekend I watched Alex & Emma, a really movie cool starring Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson. One of the main characters is a stenographer. The plot is about an author who is experiencing writer’s block (Luke Wilson playing Alex). He hires a court reporter (Emma played by Kate Hudson) to write out his novel as he dictates it. This movie is a romantic comedy so you can pretty much guess what happens next.

I wish they would have instructed Kate Hudson on the proper posture and hand movements of a stenographer. She also never sets her machine up on a tripod. It is awkwardly set up on her lap, a sofa, and on tables of varying heights throughout the movie. However, I still love that the main character is a court reporter!!

I think this movie is one of the few, if not only movies, where one of the characters directly refers to the court reporter in a scene. I wonder if Michelle Pfeiffer being a former court reporter has anything to do with that.

Ben Affleck’s character in Daredevil was an attorney. You can see a court reporter in one of the court scenes.
