Legal Vocabulary: Motion In Limine

Nolo defines motion in limine as: “A motion made before a trial begins, asking the court to decide whether particular evidence will be admissible. A motion in limine is most often made to exclude evidence by a party who believes that evidence would prejudice the jury against him or her. For example, a defendant in a criminal trial might make a motion in limine to exclude evidence of previous crimes.”

New Word: Clickbait

Steno New Word Logo CroppedHere’s a word has been recently added to the English lexicon:

According to Wikipedia, clickbait is defined as “web content that is aimed at generating online advertising revenue, especially at the expense of quality or accuracy, relying on sensationalist headlines to attract click-throughs and to encourage forwarding of the material over online social networks. Clickbait headlines typically aim to exploit the ‘curiosity gap,’ providing just enough information to make the reader curious, but not enough to satisfy their curiosity without clicking through to the linked content.

Medical Monday: Guaiac Test

A guaiac test is a test in which the presence of blood is tested in excrement. This test is used to detect bleeding of the large intestine. The wood resin from a tree in the genus of Guajacum is used for this test. When this resin comes into contact with blood it turns blue, thereby indicating the presence of blood.
