Psittacosis is “an infectious disease of birds caused by a bacterium transmissible to humans in whom it occurs as a flu-like illness often accompanied by pneumonia.” This disease is also called “parrot fever,” or “ornithosis.”

Medical Monday: Vitrectomy

According to the Free Dictionary, a vitrectomy is: “The surgical removal of the vitreous (transparent gel that fills the eye from the iris to the retina).” The vitreous is then replaced with saline. The saline applies the same pressure that the vitreous does. This prevents the eye from collapsing.

Medical Monday: Darvocet

Darvocet is classified as a narcotic pain reliever. The drug contains a combination of acetaminophen and propoxyphene. Darvocet was prescribed to relieve mild to moderate pain that exists with, or without, a fever. However, in November 2010, Darvocet was withdrawn from the United States market.
