Video: Light-Medical Q & A (100, 110, 120)

I used this as my warm-up practice today. This is light-medical testimony.

This testimony practice contains the terms: chronic paroxysmal hemicrania and Indocin.

Chronic paroxysmal hemicrania is defined as follows on Wikipedia: “Chronic paroxysmal hemicrania (CPH), also known as Sjaastad syndrome, is a severe debilitating unilateral headache, usually affecting the area around the eye. Unlike migraine it has NO neurological symptoms associated with it. It normally consists of multiple severe yet short headache attacks. These attacks normally will only affect one side of the cranium, hence the term hemicrania. It is more common in females than males. CPH headaches are treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, in particular indomethacin, which is usually totally effective in eliminating the symptoms.”

CBC Requirements

The acronym CBC stands for, “certified broadcast captioner.” CBC certification is issued by the National Court Reporters Association via a two-part examination.

The CBC test consists of a written knowledge test and a skills test.

The written knowledge portion of the CBC test must be passed with a percentage of 70% or higher. The questions on the written knowledge test are based on the following categories: Language skills, writing realtime, research, and realtime writing in the broadcast environment.

The CBC skills test is comprised of the following three steps:

1) Setting up and operating your equipment.

2) Accurately writing realtime for five minutes at 96% accuracy from professionally recorded literary material at the speed of 180 words per minute.

3) Converting your file to an ASCII text file.

The written knowledge test and skills test are offered on separate days.

Medical Monday: Achondroplasia

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines achondroplasia as “A genetic disorder disturbing normal growth of cartilage, resulting in a form of dwarfism characterized by a usually normal torso and shortened limbs, and usually inherited as a autonomic dominant trait.”

Writing “achondroplasia” on the machine, syllable by syllable, would be as follows:
/A/KOPB/TKRA/PHRAEU/SHA or /A/KHOPB/TKRA/PHRAEU/SHA or /A/KOPB/TKRA/PHRAEUZ/KWRA or /A/KHOPB/TKRA/PHRAEUZ/KWRA

Dictionary Challenge: Day Five

Today, I put 52 new entries in my dictionary. I wasn’t able to tote my laptop with me today to the NCRA conference. It would have been too much for me to carry and commute with. Nonetheless, I still was able to exceed by daily goal by two entries.

[SIDEBAR: I will blog about my experience at the annual NCRA conference in the upcoming week.]

Happy Dictionary Building,

Dictionary Challenge: Day Four

Miracle of all miracles; I made my mark exactly. Today, I put 50 new entries in my dictionary. This was miraculous considering all of the running around I did today attending #NCRA12.

I put a lot more medical words starting with “A’s” in my dictionary…Maybe tomorrow I’ll travel with my laptop, and I’ll be able to put some entries into my dictionary while I enjoy the festivities of #NCRA12.

Happy Dictionary Building,

Elsie Villega
