Medical Monday: Avulsion

Avulsion is defined as: (1) The forcible tearing away of a body part by trauma or surgery. (2) The tearing away of an attached or anchored tissue, as in the avulsion of a muscle from its insertion in bone— e.g., an avulsion fracture in which bone remains attached to the inserted muscle, but loses its attachment to surrounding bone. (3) Tearing away, forcible separation, or complete displacement of a tooth from the alveolar bone.”

Medical Monday: Cachexia


According to Wikipedia, cachexia can be described as follows: “Loss of weight, muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness, and significant loss of appetite in someone who is not actively trying to lose weight. The formal definition of cachexia is the loss of body mass that cannot be reversed nutritionally: Even if the affected patient eats more calories, lean body mass will be lost, indicating a primary pathology is in place.” This condition is said to be caused by a severe chronic illness.

Medical Monday: Edema

Edema is the swelling of soft tissue due to fluid accumulation. Edema can affect any part of your body; however, this condition is usually found in the limbs. Edema can be caused by an underlying disease, pregnancy, or medication. This type of swelling can be alleviated through a redction of salt intake or medication.
