Court Reporter Spotted: Alex & Emma

Alex & EmmaThis weekend I watched Alex & Emma, a really movie cool starring Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson. One of the main characters is a stenographer. The plot is about an author who is experiencing writer’s block (Luke Wilson playing Alex). He hires a court reporter (Emma played by Kate Hudson) to write out his novel as he dictates it. This movie is a romantic comedy so you can pretty much guess what happens next.

I wish they would have instructed Kate Hudson on the proper posture and hand movements of a stenographer. She also never sets her machine up on a tripod. It is awkwardly set up on her lap, a sofa, and on tables of varying heights throughout the movie. However, I still love that the main character is a court reporter!!

Medical Monday: Adrenal Glands

“The adrenal glands are situated (as their name indicates: ad, meaning “at,” plus renes, meaning “kidneys”) on top of the kidneys and in front of the twelfth thoracic vertebra. The adrenal glands are chiefly responsible for regulating stress responses from your hormones. These hormones all play a part in the fight-or-flight response activated by the sympathetic nervous system. In simple terms, the adrenal glands link the thoughts of the brain to physical action in the human body.” -From, “Winning Body Language” By: Mark Bowden

Steno Gadgets & Accessories: Zoom H2 Recorder

Zoom H2
I’ve had this nifty little recorder for quite some time. I used it to record dictation in school. In addition to being a great recorder, the Zoom H2 can also serve as a USB microphone.

The Zoom H2 has some handy features such as: Four microphones that can record on two or four channels, an automatic recording function that can be activated by voice or decibel level, compressors, low-cut filters, MP3 or WAV format recording, WAV to MP3 converter, metronome, and tuner.

This recorder has always given me quality recordings. Just be sure to keep extra batteries around if you plan to use it for extensive time periods. (Note: It also comes with a plug-in power cord.)

Steno In The Park: The Wonder Park (Atlantic City)

My absolute favorite park to practice in has been The Wonder Park, located in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The park is beautifully scenic. The ambience is peaceful and inspiring. Large sized inspirational words like: possible, glorious, remember, wonder, believe, passion, desire, imagine, almost, continue, becoming, another, and changing (to name a few) are scattered all around the park. One of the cool features of the park is that the words light up at night. Love it!
